Calligraphy versus cursive
tools and terms
I am not affiliated with Goulet pens in any way, but Brian has great videos and so I am sharing this one for anyone interested in tools for writing with.
I will say here he calls dip pens ‘calligraphy pens’ which is and is not accurate. There are dip pen nibs for calligraphy, for drawing, and for regular writing. The metal nib and holder is the direct successor to the reed and quill pens of the past. They work great, just different.
Fountain pens hold their ink inside the pen, and use a feed to help control ink flow.
There are fountain pens, usually fairly cheap ones, made and sold for calligraphy (often with broad, wide nibs that don't work very well) though some do ok.
Caveats aside, still a great video, so enjoy!
Oh, and there were traveling dip oens of different types, and special pen cases and inkwells for traveling scribes, clergy, officials, etc. but that is kind of a niche topic.
